Rum’s the word: Brugal Extra Viejo
Brugal Extra Viejo Rum
When you say rum, I hear mojito!!! It’s my new favorite beverage, mostly due to the use of tons of fresh mint, which I adore! So when I read on Peter Shankman’s HARO about the opportunity to score an invite to the Brugal rum-tasting, I heard a mojito calling me and my hand shot up!
The tasting was held at the clubby John Allan’s, where gentlemen go for a bit of “manscaping” (I love that new word!). Unfortunately, but certainly not disappointingly, this was a tasting of fine sipping rum: the Brugal Extra Viejo. I did a quick expectation make-over and slipped right into sippin’ mode.
Available Stateside for the first time ever, this “extra old” rum from the Dominican Republic was supremely smooth with a rich amber color and sweet, spiced vanilla flavor notes. Definitely worthy of its place in a snifter, with or without a smoking jacket. It’s a sophisticated taste that is quite reasonably priced (suggested retail price for the 750 ml size is $24.99) and an excellent addition to any rum connoisseur’s collection. Those same connoisseurs might say that making a mojito out of the Brugal Extra Viejo would be a fine liquor crime, but you know I’m gonna do it since it will be outstanding!!!
Created in the Dominican Republic by Don Andres Brugal in 1888, Brugal is the largest-selling rum brand in the Dominican Republic and among the top-five rum
brands in the world.
