The Wandering Foodie and I get down to the Roots Cafe: 93 Plates Project

Could you eat at three restaurants a day for thirty one days straight and blog about each meal? Hagan Blount aka The Wandering Foodie is ready, willing, able and doing it! Plus, he’s invited one NYC food blogger to join him at each meal and I had the pleasure this morning! We met on day five, plate thirteen of his 93 Plates project at the Roots Cafe in Brooklyn.

We met Jamey, the owner, who was beaming about his year old cafe that has quickly become a much appreciated, down-to-earth, neighborhood joint. He and his wife came to Brooklyn from Alabama and opened Roots Cafe in December ‘08. They are living their creed of “Coffee, Community and Culture” by serving Stumptown coffee and comforting foods with live music on the weekends and local art openings monthly, all wrapped in warm, friendly service. Their sandwiches and paninis all come with a wee side of yummy grits bringing a bit of their southern roots to the hood.

Hagan had the Green Eggs and Ham burrito with ham, eggs, avocado and spinach with their house-made chai latte. I had the Breakfast Burrito (eggs, black beans, cheese, etc.), which was doing the backstroke in a pool of their signature cheesy, salsa grits with a nice dollop of guacamole on top. We chucked on some Texas Pete hot sauce and we were very happy indeed.
